Effectively understanding and managing Montana's vast geologic resources requires powerful support systems designed to gather, store, analyze, and communicate complex geospatial data. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are specifically designed to meet this requirement.
Patricia (Trish) serves as a GIS Specialist at the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG). She provides GIS and cartographic design expertise and training to facilitate publication of maps and digital geospatial data. She offers expertise with the ESRI ArcGIS suite of software (ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, etc.) to bring together maps, data, and people to enable better decision making and innovation.
Trish's education and experience as a geologist have given her specialized knowledge and insight into the unique requirements and complexities of geologic mapping. She brings to the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology over 13 years of experience and expertise in geologic mapping, GIS analysis, cartography, geospatial data management, and the U.S. Geological Survey's Geologic Mapping Schema (GeMS).
Over the years, Trish has made many beautiful maps. Three of her favorite products are the 2015 Alaska Mineral Resource map (https://doi.org/10.14509/29558), the Geologic Map of Kasatochi Volcano (https://doi.org/10.14509/29718), and Alaska Highway Infrastructure Corridor geologic map series (https://dggs.alaska.gov/pubs/project/166). It is common for cartographers be unlisted as primary authors - in such cases, Patricia is cited in the credits or map marginalia.
Patricia's presentations and publications between 2018 and 2023 are cited under the name of Patricia G. Ekberg.
