Fundamentals of Slag-Metal Reactions - High temperature slag-metal reactions play a central role in industrial processes such as refining of steel and silicon as prominent examples. This lecture is intended as a brief overview of the thermodynamics, reaction mechanisms, chemical kinetics, and mass transfer of solutes. The quite complex and unusual transient interfacial phenomena involved in many slag-metal reactions shall be highlighted. The limitations of our knowledge in this area and future directions in research will also be discussed.
