Access to the Anaconda Collection

Specimens may be loaned for formal research purposes on the Butte mining district. The collection is not available for teaching purposes. Loan requests are directed to the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology Director.

The requesting researcher must provide a detailed description of the proposed research and the specific specimens needed. Onsite assistance from the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology staff is available to assist the researcher in identifying the needed specimens, if necessary. Small amounts of the specimens may be used for analysis, thin sections, or polished specimens but, in no instance, may a sample be completely consumed or destroyed. All materials, including thin and polished sections, must be returned to the collection and analytical results and published articles forwarded to the MBMG Director for inclusion in the collection. A formal loan agreement acknowledging the terms of the loan must be signed and filed with the Director prior to release of any specimen.
