Description |
The paper describes an unusual member of the Kootenai Formation that crops out in the Great Falls, Montana area. Unlike the typical Kootenai of western Montana the unit is highly quartzose and displays marine characteristics. The paper documents in detail the sedimentology, stratigraphy (including sequence stratigraphy), and tectonic setting of this unit which is informally referred to as the Great Falls member of the Kootenai Formation. Significantly, the Great Falls member documents the earliest Cretaceous transgression of a Boreal Sea into Montana which was previously thought to have occurred later.
